Sumpter Photos, historic

In concert with my work on the history of Sumpter's first 150 years, I'll occasionally upload favorite photos to this page. Most of these photos are from Baker County Library's online digital archives.

Panoramas: 1895     1897     1903     1912

The oldest known picture of Sumpter was taken in 1895
.  It looks west down Granite Street. Granite Street was Sumpter's downtown. One of the buildings in this photo is the Starr Hotel, built in 1878. It existed and was expanded on until the fire of 13 Aug 1917. The fire destroyed the heart of Sumpter and shifted downtown to Mill St.

The next oldest pictures of Sumpter were taken in 1896-97. The one on the right shows how the town has grown to the south of the 1895 picture. The photo on the left is west of town looking back eastward, a bit of an opposite perspective to the other two. The Sumpter Valley Railway reached Sumpter in Oct 1896.

This 1903 panorama is three photos stitched together for an advertising brochure. Note the caption: Sumpter, Oregon; Population 1899, 300; Population 1903, 3300.

In
1912, Sumpter had already started to decline slightly due to stricter regulations on hard-rock mining. The next year, however, was to see the arrival of the first dredging operations in Sumpter Valley.
